Military BRATS documentary with Q&A

The program will be held at Hirschi High School Monday, Oct. 19 beginning at 7pm. Attendees will view a documentary "Brats: Our Journey Home." Following the documentary audience members may stay for a Question and Answer session with the producers and writer of the film. Did I mention this is FREE? FYI... due to certain subject matter this is not recommended for children under 13.

It's hard to imagine a military BRAT'S childhood. Moving from base to base around the world, they are at home everywhere - and nowhere. There are 1.2 million children being raised in the military today. An estimated 15 million Americans are former BRATS. They include actors Jessica Alba and Robert Duvall, Senator John McCain, and basketball star Shaquille O'Neal.

BRATS is the first cinematic glimpse into a global subculture whose journey to adulthood is a high-octane mixture of incredible excitement and enormous pain. Make no mistake - BRATS is not about the U.S. military - it's about their children, who grow up in a paradox that is idealistic and authoritarian, privileged and perilous, supportive and stifling - all at the same time. Their passports say "United States," but they're really citizens of the world.

Singer/songwriter and Air Force brat Kris Kristofferson leads us through the heart of their experiences, sharing intimate memories with fellow BRATS, including General Norman Schwarzkopf and author Mary Edwards Wertsch, whose ground-breaking book, Military Brats: Legacies of Childhood Inside the Fortress was one of the seminal inspirations for this film. Their stories reveal the peculiar landscape of their childhood, the culture that binds them together, and the power it exerts over their adult lives.

A seven-year work of passion by independent filmmaker Donna Musil, BRATS features rare archival footage, home movies and private photographs from post-war Japan, Germany, and Vietnam.

Below is a synopsis of the film. More information, including a clip of the film can be found at http://www.bratsourjourneyhome.com/ .

Texas Ranch Roundup

This weekend is the Texas Ranch Roundup down at the MPEC (Muti-Purpose Event Center). A friend of mine has taken her kids in previous years to the Kid's Roundup (Friday from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) and said it was great. From what I understand, you actually get to go down on the arena floor in the dirt. They have a petting zoo, mechanical bull (they go real slow for the kids or you can ride with them), they can ride on a longhorn, make a lasso rope, ride on a miniature horse and more. In past years, they served hot-dogs, chips and drinks. I believe the event is free and that you only have to pay for food.

The Texas Ranch Roundup is the original ranch rodeo held in Wichita Falls, Texas each August.
This year marks the 29th year the event will be held. It features 10 historic Texas ranches competing for bragging rights in arena events, chuck wagon cooking and festival events. All proceeds from the event benefit the North Texas Rehab Center in Wichita Falls, the West Texas Rehab Center in Abilene and the West Texas Boys Ranch in San Angelo. All provide quality physical, occupational and speech therapy to children and adults regardless of their ability to pay.

1-2-3 Magic

For Military Families: This is a 4 hour workshop divided into 2 sessions offered on Saturday, September 19 & 26 from 0930-1130, AND/OR Tuesday, September 22 & 29 from 1730-1930, at the Airman & Family Readiness Center. Please call Robbie Monaghan at the A&FRC (940-676-3292) to register.
It's not easy being a parent. You want kids who listen and children you can enjoy. You want to raise happy and competent youngsters, but you don't have a lot of free time to read discipline and parenting books. You also don't need advice that requires you to be a saint, genius or professional psychologist.

Dr. Thomas W. Phelan and his extremely popular 1-2-3 Magic program, addresses the difficult task of child discipline with humor, keen insight and proven experience. Dr. Phelan simplifies the job of parenting in three
straightforward steps:

Step 1: Controlling Obnoxious Behavior: Learn an amazingly simple technique to get the kids to STOP doing what you don't want them to do (whining, arguing, tantrums, sibling rivalry, etc.).

Step 2: Encouraging Good Behavior: Learn several effective methods to get your kids to START doing what you do want them to do (cleaning rooms, picking up, going to bed, homework, etc.).

Step 3: Strengthening Your Relationship: Learn four powerful techniques that reinforce the bond between you and your children.

The award winning, best selling 1-2-3 Magic program has sold over one million copies, and is presented in seminars and workshops across the country.

It provides easy-to-follow steps for disciplining children without yelling, arguing, or spanking.

The DVD's feature Dr. Phelan's entertaining seminar presentation and real-life family vignettes that help to reinforce the concepts.

Booster Seats

Well, I still haven't bought a new booster seat....for my 6 year old. She's still in her convertible car seat (Britax Wizard, which is similar to the Britax Boulevard). The weight limit goes from 5-65 lbs and height under 49". Since she's still in that range, I've never switched her. But boy does she want to!

I've been doing research and was told that "any booster seat would do" since it's more of a function of the car's seat belt. But, after researching more, I found that's not true. Here's the report that came out in Oct 2008. http://www.iihs.org/externaldata/srdata/docs/sr4308.pdf.

(this is from http://kgmb9.com/main/content/view/10164/50/ because I didn't want to type it all up)
"the first major test says many of the booster seats made may not be safe enough. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tested 41 seats looking for those that make children sit high enough, so that adult-safety belts will effectively protect them. Of them, 13 failed to get the institute's first ever recommendations.

Parents, our volunteers are a very important part of our program. There are various ways young people can volunteer their talents: as horse handlers, spotters, barn keepers, maintenance workers, organizers, office workers and team leaders. During the summer, Junior Volunteers ages 10-18 are able to come to Whispers of Hope for full days where they learn to work around the barn with the horses and other volunteers, performing daily chores. This program runs from June to July and helps keep the youth motivated and active. No couch potatoes here! Tuesday thru Friday during each camp session, the Youth will arrive at 8 am with sack lunch and water jug and be picked up around 4:30 pm. They will learn teamwork, compassion, motivation, and responsibility, among other things. If they are interested, they will also be able to learn more about riding, in a supervised setting. We are a non-profit organization, and each child’s $60.00 weekly fee goes directly to buy feed for the horses.
Let your children be part of a mission which enables other young people with challenges to become more productive in their own lives. This mission can only succeed with God’s grace and the support of our volunteers. Thank you for your support.

So I'm researching for a booster seat for my child and saw that the American Academy of Pediatrics is suggesting that toddlers stay in rear-facing car seats until age 2, not age 1. Just thought I'd share that with other moms. Here's the link for more information.
