Museum of North Texas

We ventured for the first time ever to the Museum of North Texas History (MONTH) today and we all really enjoyed it!  They have a model train exhibit right now and the man who built the trains and the surrounding city was there to explain how he made them (very creatively!).  They also have toys from long ago, which my children enjoyed looking at.  Many different rooms to go through with all the history from the oil to military service.  And free!  They are location downtown near some construction, but we easily found parking.  Fun activity to do during the holidays and with family visiting in town.

Museum of North Texas History - 720 Indiana - 322-7628 - Tues-Thurs 10-12, 1-4; Sat 10-2. Free.

Thangs of Fairway II

Sunrise Optimist Club gears up for the season with its Thangs of Fairway II haunted house in the old Cox’s Furniture building on Fairway.
Actually, Thangs of Fairway doesn’t only include a haunted house, but a pumpkin patch and haunted hayride, too.

The Haunted Hayride is every Friday and Saturday night during the Halloween season. The ride will take visitors around an old grave yard, where specters roam around the gravestones, along with a mysterious family that wanders around the area.

And young children might want to check out the pumpkin patch. From 2-5 p.m. Oct. 16, the pumpkin patch will be the place to be for face painting, photographs with friendly Halloween characters, and a hayride, cotton candy and popcorn.

Proceeds from this spook house, as always, benefit high school youth booster clubs and Sunrise Optimist Youth activities.

When: Oct. 22-23 and Oct. 28-31. Hours are 7:30 p.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and Sunday.

Where: 3920 Fairway Blvd. (the old Cox’s Furniture building)
Cost: $5 per attraction per person

Then on Oct. 31, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., a fall festival atmosphere for younger children will prevail with trick-or-treating, hayrides and a costume party before the haunts begin at 7 p.m.

Volunteer in Wichita Falls

I've always thought that the best place to volunteer with kids would be in a retirement home, like Rolling Meadows...so be sure to check out the ones locally and bring a smile to someones face!

Many of these places take donations as well (such as clothes and toys that you no longer need in your house!)

Habitat for Humanity - I called them a while back and asked how I could volunteer with small children and they said that we could hang brochures on doors for them.  Their other website is http://habitatwf.com/.

American Red Cross - They also offer Infant and Child CPR classes.

Boys and Girls Club of WF

Interfaith Ministries

Faith Mission

WF Area Food Bank

Falls Miracle League - Buddies must be at least 10 years of age or older.

Special Olympics - Volunteers ages 14 and younger are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent or adult volunteer.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

United Way

Wichita County Humane Society

The ARC of Wichita Falls

Good Will of NT

There are other volunteer opportunities at Hospice WF and Community Healthcare Center of WF and First Step, Inc and Child Advocates (CASA), which are all wonderful organizations if you're looking to volunteer while your children are in school.
Wichita Falls used to have their own volunteer site, but they must've taken it down. It looks like you can search for other volunteer opportunities on this site: http://www.volunteermatch.org/.
